  • Adeyemi College of Education was named after Canon M. C. Adeyemi (one of the earliest educationists in Ondo town)

  • Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo was established in 1963 to give expression to the recommendation of the Commission.

  • The institution was named after the Reverend Canon M.C. Adeyemi (1882-1942) in recognition of his noble contributions to the educational development in the then Ondo Province.

  • The College started operating on 22nd May, 1964 with its first intake of 93 students- 24 women and 69 men.

  • The project was financed by the Government of the then Western Region, the UNESCO and also through bilateral aids received from the foreign organizations.

  • At the beginning of 1966 the government of the Western Region decided to merge the Ransome Kuti College of Education with the Olunloyo College of Education.
  • At the end of 1967 the Olunloyo College of Education was nominally integrated with Adeyemi College of Education Ondo.

  • Between 1964 and 1972, the College was nothing more than a unit of the Western Region/ State Ministry of Education.
  • The college was initially academically associated with the University of Ibadan in preparation of students for the award of the Nigeria certificate.

  • In 1972 the College was transferred to the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) Ile-Ife, for supervision of its academic programmes.

  • The University later took full responsibility both for the academic policy and the administration of the College including staff recruitment.

  • In 1981, owing to the advancements and potentials of the College, the Council of the University of Ife made representation to the Federal Government to take over administration of the College by establishing a Governing Council to run it.

  • On 22nd April, 1981 the Senate of the University of Ife approved that the College commence running the degree programme of the Faculty of Education.

  • The College started the programme in 1982/83 session in three departments namely: English, French and Yoruba.

  • The Interim Governing Board continued to administer the College until 31st December, 1981 when the College was administratively disarticulated from the Obafemi Awolowo University. Nevertheless the College still enjoys academic affiliation with the University on programmes.

  • Adeyemi College of Education is known for excellence in the training and production of competent holders of the Nigeria Certificate in Education to man the lower strata of the Secondary School system.
